# Frank Talbeau — A Cycle of the West character guide

> Frank Talbeau in A Cycle of the West by John G. Neihardt.

**Role:** major

**Also known as:** Talbeau, Fink Talbeau

**First appearance:** 0000-the-song-of-three-friends

## Snapshot

A young keelboatman torn between two friends, whose desperate fireside plea to Mike Fink measures loyalty against the cost of losing either man.

## Who they are

Frank Talbeau is the peacemaker of the keelboat crew, a man who loves both Mike Fink and Carpenter and finds himself commanded to choose between them as between food and drink. His blizzard-night appeal to old brawls at Baton Rouge and the Vide Poche dive reveals a heart that treasures shared memory more than pride. His anguish over the rift foreshadows how fragile the bonds of the expedition truly are, and how much of the story's early tension lives in a single unanswered plea.
