## Snapshot

A toiling Lincoln's Inn lawyer who befriends the Warrenders in London, drawing out Chatty's confidences with an ease that flusters her more than she understands.

## Who they are

Mr. Cavendish is the family's urbane London acquaintance, a self-described toiling slave of the law who offers to be 'of use' to Mrs. Warrender and her daughters during their Half Moon Street stay. His easy intimacy—asking after Theo, teasing Chatty about the family news—creates a charged space where Chatty, unguarded for the first time, nearly tells him everything about Theo's engagement. His attentions matter because they unsettle Chatty's placid loyalty and introduce a worldly, slightly dangerous alternative to the rectory's toned-down sympathies.
