  1. Chapter 1

    I

Theo Warrender, a promising young scholar, experiences a profound disillusionment after failing to achieve a first-class degree at Oxford. He realizes that the admiration and attention he received were based on his potential to bring academic glory to the college, not on his personal worth. His subsequent disenchantment leads him to abandon his studies and withdraw from society, a situation exacerbated by his father's terminal illness.

  2. Chapter 2

    II

This chapter describes the Warrender family and their modest estate, the Warren. Mr. Warrender, a country gentleman of limited means and intellect, falls ill and dies, preoccupied with trivial complaints about his beef-tea. His son Theodore, a scholar who has grown apart from his family, returns home after his father's death and is deeply affected by the encounter with mortality, while his sisters Minnie and Chatty handle the loss with dutiful composure.

  3. Chapter 3

    III

Theo and his mother take a walk in the days after Mr. Warrender's death, struggling with their own feelings and the social obligations of the funeral. Theo grows restless with the enforced mourning, while Mrs. Warrender grapples with guilt over not feeling the expected grief and secretly begins to contemplate future plans. The funeral itself is a large, proper affair, and afterward the family returns home to a changed household.

  4. Chapter 4

    IV

Mrs. Warrender reflects on her stifling marriage and her children's alignment with their father's dull nature, contrasting with her own desire for life and change. After Mr. Warrender's funeral, tensions rise over Theo's behavior and future plans, culminating in a sudden accident where Lord Markland is thrown from his horse and brought to the Warren for aid.

  5. Chapter 5

    V

This chapter explores Lady Markland's unhappy marriage, her deep bond with her son Geoff, and the moment she learns of her husband's accident. Theo Warrender arrives to bring her to Lord Markland's bedside, and the chapter ends with Warrender's irritation at the boy's constant presence.
