  1. Chapter 1

A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court

The opening chapter introduces the narrator's encounter with a mysterious stranger, Hank Morgan, who claims to have been transported back in time to King Arthur's Camelot. Hank, a practical and resourceful Yankee from 19th-century Connecticut, recounts his initial experiences in the medieval world, including his capture by knights, his clever use of an eclipse to save his life, and his gradual rise to power as 'The Boss.' The chapter sets the stage for his efforts to modernize Arthurian England, blending humor, satire, and social commentary.

  2. Chapter 2

    A Word of Explanation

The narrator encounters a mysterious stranger at Warwick Castle who displays an uncanny familiarity with ancient armor and speaks of King Arthur's court as if he had lived in that era. The stranger claims to have witnessed and even caused a bullet hole in Sir Sagramor's hauberk. Later, the narrator reads from Malory's book and the stranger returns, eventually revealing his story: he is a practical Yankee from Connecticut, a skilled mechanic and factory superintendent, who after a fight was knocked unconscious and awoke in a strange land where a knight in armor claimed him as a captive. The stranger, Hank Morgan, explains he kept a journal and later turned it into a book, which he hands to the narrator.

  3. Chapter 3

    I: Camelot

The narrator finds himself in a serene, isolated landscape that he identifies as 'Camelot.' He encounters a young girl who is startled by his appearance, and later observes a procession of knights and soldiers entering a castle, revealing a stark contrast between the rustic, impoverished village life and the grand, medieval pageantry.

  4. Chapter 4

    King Arthur's Court

Hank Morgan, having been transported to the past, converses with a page named Clarence and learns that he is in King Arthur's Court in the year 528. He resolves to use his knowledge of a coming solar eclipse to establish his authority, and is taken before the Round Table where he observes the court's crude and violent customs.

  5. Chapter 5

III: Knights of the Table Round

Hank Morgan observes the knights of the Round Table, noting their childlike simplicity and the absurdity of their dueling culture. He witnesses Sir Kay falsely claim credit for capturing prisoners, only for Sir Launcelot to be revealed as the true hero. Merlin then drones through a long, familiar tale, putting nearly everyone to sleep.
