Ideas that structure A Confession by Leo Tolstoy — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
The Search for Life's Meaning
The central theme of the book, where Tolstoy recounts his existential crisis and desperate quest to find a purpose for life in the face of inevitable death, leading him to question all his pursuits.
Faith and Doubt
Tolstoy explores his loss of childhood religious faith, his intellectual rejection of Orthodox Christianity, and his eventual struggle to reconcile reason with the irrational but life-sustaining faith of the common people.
Vanity of Worldly Success
The book critiques the emptiness of ambition, fame, wealth, and artistic acclaim, showing how these pursuits ultimately fail to provide lasting meaning and lead to moral corruption.
Reason vs. Faith
Tolstoy presents a conflict between rational knowledge, which leads to nihilism and the conclusion that life is meaningless, and faith, which offers a practical meaning for living but seems irrational.
Moral Corruption of Society
The narrative condemns the hypocrisy of the educated and wealthy classes, who praise vice and selfishness while professing morality, and contrasts this with the simple, laborious life of the peasantry.
Death and Mortality
The fear of death and the awareness of life's transience drive Tolstoy's crisis, and he ultimately seeks a faith that gives life a meaning that death cannot destroy.
The Value of Simple Life
Tolstoy finds meaning not in intellectual or artistic pursuits, but in observing and eventually embracing the humble, laborious, and faith-filled life of ordinary working people.
Selfishness and Self-Improvement
The book traces Tolstoy's shift from a selfish pursuit of pleasure and perfection for personal glory to a recognition that true meaning comes from humility, love, and service to others.
