## Who they are

This spirit throws open the world Scrooge has been ignoring: the Cratchit kitchen, Fred's party, miners and sailors and strangers all keeping the day. Its abundance is generous, but its torch can sprinkle sorrow as easily as blessing, and it carries a hidden warning beneath the laughter. In showing Scrooge the warmth he has refused, the Ghost of Christmas Present turns the miser's curiosity into something closer to longing.
