# Ghost of Christmas Past — A Christmas Carol character guide

> Ghost of Christmas Past in A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** the Spirit, Spirit, kind Spirit, Good Spirit

**First appearance:** 0003-stave-ii-the-first-of-the-three-spirits

## Snapshot

A strange, bright spirit — part child, part old man — who draws back the curtain on Scrooge's forgotten Christmases and asks him, gently, to look.

## Who they are

This spirit walks Scrooge down roads he could once trace blindfold, past a lonely schoolroom, a laughing Fezziwig, and faces he has spent decades refusing to remember. Its power is not menace but tenderness: it notices the tear on Scrooge's cheek and calls it what it is. By forcing the miser to weep for his forgotten self, the Ghost of Christmas Past makes the later hauntings possible.
