> Ebenezer Scrooge in A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens.

**Role:** major

**Also known as:** Scrooge, Mr. Scrooge, Ebenezer, Master Scrooge, Uncle Scrooge

**First appearance:** 0001-a-christmas-carol

## Snapshot

A squeezing, wrenching, grasping miser who counts his profits in a freezing counting-house, until four night visitors force him to reckon with the life he has hoarded.

## Who they are

Scrooge sits at the cold center of the book's social world: the employer Bob Cratchit fears, the uncle Fred keeps inviting, the partner Marley's ghost has come back to warn. His defining tension is between the ledger and the heart — he dismisses Christmas as humbug yet cannot stop the tears when the first spirit shows him his own neglected boyhood. Watching him flinch, weep, and finally laugh at his own knocker is the engine of the early and middle arc, and the reason every reader leans in.
