**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** the delighted Mrs. Glynde

**First appearance:** 0000-i

## Snapshot

Arthur's doting mother, whose gentle authority over her poet son dissolves the moment his stepsisters Ida and Juliet enter the room.

## Who they are

Mrs. Glynde moves through the Culvers household as the mother of Arthur, the fair, dreamy-eyed poet whose verses Juliet is forever being drafted to hear. Alone with her son she can be sympathetic and firm, but face to face with Ida and Juliet she is quietly overborne, and her wishes for Arthur's future carry little weight against theirs. Her presence sharpens the domestic comedy of a blended family where the daughters' whims, not the elders' plans, tend to decide matters.
