## Snapshot

A Parisian actress burned in her dressing-room, whose dying hours draw Clive to a dim staircase and a message that seems to concern Ida Culvers.

## Who they are

Marie Schira is a name Clive recognizes from Parisian playbills, now a woman dying on an upper floor after her gauze sleeve caught fire at the Théâtre Beaumarchais. Her sister, a religious in a coal-scuttle bonnet, keeps vigil, while an untidy old woman mutters that delirium has set in and Marie will not last the night. The mystery of what such a woman could know about Ida Culvers pulls Clive into a dreary, candlelit wait that opens the novel's darker thread.
