# Juliet Culvers — A Bride of a Summer’s Day character guide > Juliet Culvers in A Bride of a Summer’s Day by Catherine Louisa Pirkis. **Role:** major **Also known as:** Juliet, IX Juliet **First appearance:** 0000-i ## Snapshot Quick-witted and mischievous, Juliet writes impassioned letters begging her fiancé to hunt for her vanished cousin, even offering to surrender their engagement as reward. ## Who they are Juliet moves through the Culvers family drama with a satirical tongue and a talent for needling her elders, whether teasing Clive about his jealousy or sparring with Mrs. Glynde over Arthur's African ambitions. Beneath her flippancy lies genuine loyalty: when Ida disappears on her wedding day, Juliet bombards Clive with desperate pleas to involve the police and refuses to let the matter be quietly hushed. Her engagement to Clive, half-serious and half-performative, gives the early chapters their romantic friction and makes her a pivotal voice pressing the family toward the truth. ## Relationships ### [Ida Culvers](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/a_bride_of_a_summer_s_day_se/characters/ida_culvers) _family_ Sisters with a deep, complex bond, marked by both closeness and rivalry over Arthur Glynde. ### [Arthur Glynde](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/a_bride_of_a_summer_s_day_se/characters/arthur_glynde) _romantic_ Arthur is a devoted suitor to Juliet, but his feelings are complicated by her sister Ida's presence. ### [Clive Redway](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/a_bride_of_a_summer_s_day_se/characters/clive_redway) _friendship_ Clive and Juliet share a warm, confiding friendship, often discussing their separate romantic entanglements. ### [Father Baldwin](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/a_bride_of_a_summer_s_day_se/characters/father_baldwin) _professional_ Father Baldwin serves as Juliet's spiritual advisor and confessor, offering moral guidance. ### [Peggy](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/a_bride_of_a_summer_s_day_se/characters/peggy) _friendship_ Juliet and Peggy are close friends, with Peggy acting as a confidante and ally. ### [Ida Culvers](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/a_bride_of_a_summer_s_day_se/characters/ida_culvers) _family_ Sisters with a deep, complex bond, marked by both closeness and rivalry over Arthur Glynde. ### [Ida Culvers](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/a_bride_of_a_summer_s_day_se/characters/ida_culvers) _family_ Sisters with a deep, complex bond, marked by both closeness and rivalry over Arthur Glynde. ### [Clive Redway](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/a_bride_of_a_summer_s_day_se/characters/clive_redway) _friendship_ Clive and Juliet share a warm, confiding friendship, often discussing their separate romantic entanglements. ### [Father Baldwin](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/a_bride_of_a_summer_s_day_se/characters/father_baldwin) _professional_ Father Baldwin serves as Juliet's spiritual advisor and confessor, offering moral guidance. ### [Clive Redway](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/a_bride_of_a_summer_s_day_se/characters/clive_redway) _friendship_ Clive and Juliet share a warm, confiding friendship, often discussing their separate romantic entanglements. ## In the story ### [I](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/a_bride_of_a_summer_s_day_se/chapters/i) Ida's twin sister, playful and mischievous, deflects Clive's serious questions with humor and observations of the guests. ### [II](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/a_bride_of_a_summer_s_day_se/chapters/ii) At Glynde Lodge, joking about her own wedding preferences and questioning Clive about his interest in Ida's marriage. ### [III](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/a_bride_of_a_summer_s_day_se/chapters/iii) Defends Ida's careful handling of money, questions Sefton's lack of emotion, and is suspected by the family of being complicit in Ida's disappearance. ### [IV](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/a_bride_of_a_summer_s_day_se/chapters/iv) Described as an enigma, silent on Ida's whereabouts but talkative about Sefton's character. ### [V](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/a_bride_of_a_summer_s_day_se/chapters/v) Intercepts Sefton's letter, reads it to her father, and defends herself against accusations of knowing more about Ida's disappearance.
