## Who they are

Francesca ushers Ida into the shabby, ill-kept Palazzo and then keeps her waiting, disappearing into the sickroom of her young mistress Violante while the English visitor endures coarse food and intolerable heat. Agitated, weeping, and oddly evasive, she controls access to the dying girl and takes it upon herself to destroy one letter and seal another with Violante's ring. Her mixture of devotion and quiet manipulation makes her the hinge on which Ida's impulsive journey turns.
