Tarzan and the Ant Men and The Survivors

Tarzan and the Ant Men and The Survivors both develop Survival and Adaptation in the BetterReads catalog — two treatments of the same literary theme, not a random pairing.

Tarzan and the Ant Men: Tarzan's jungle skills, such as hunting, tracking, and using his senses, are crucial for survival in both the wild and the alien environments of Minuni, where he must adapt to new physical scales and social rules.

The Survivors: The colonists must adapt to the harsh, alien world of Ragnarok after being abandoned by the Gerns, facing extreme climates, dangerous wildlife, and scarce resources to survive and build a new society.

Survival and Adaptation appears as a literary theme in 13 works in the BetterReads curated set. Each book develops the idea in its own plot, voice, and historical moment — the links below open the book-scoped theme guide beside the text.

John Carter must quickly learn Martian language, customs, and combat to survive in a hostile environment, highlighting themes of resilience, resourcefulness, and the ability to adapt to extreme circumstances.

David Innes must constantly adapt to the hostile environment of Pellucidar, facing prehistoric beasts, treacherous terrain, and captivity, highlighting human resilience and ingenuity.

Characters must adapt to extreme conditions, whether on asteroids, in prisons, or in post-apocalyptic settings, using cunning, violence, or negotiation to survive, as seen with Mooney and the time traveler.
