Swallows and Amazons and Understood Betsy both develop Independence and Self-Reliance in the BetterReads catalog — two treatments of the same literary theme, not a random pairing.

Swallows and Amazons: The children are given significant freedom to camp on an island, sail boats, and solve problems on their own, learning to rely on their own skills and judgment without constant adult supervision.

Understood Betsy: The book traces Elizabeth Ann's transformation from a timid, overprotected child who depends entirely on Aunt Frances into a confident, capable girl who learns to make decisions, solve problems, and take care of herself
